Towards Quantifying Depth and Size Perception in 3D Virtual Environments

چکیده
With the fast advance of real-time computer graphics, head-mounted displays (HMDs) have become popular tools for 3D visualization. One of the most promising and challenging future uses of HMDs, however, is in applications where virtual environments enhance rather then replace real environments. The difficulty comes from the fact that the relative registration of real and virtual environments is a difficult task to perform from both a computational and a perceptual point of view, those being tightly correlated. Given a computational model for stereoscopic viewing, a better understanding of depth and size perception in virtual environments is called for, as well as the relationships between perceived depths and sizes of real and virtual objects sharing a common visual space. This paper first discusses the important parameters within the model that need to be carefully evaluated and set for accurate calibration of the system. We then describe the experimental paradigm used for assessing depth perception of two generic objects, in this case a cube and a cylinder. Finally, experimental results of perceived depth of real and virtual generic objects are presented.

متن کاملStereoscopic perception of women in real and virtual environments: A study towards educational neuroscience
Previous studies report the involvement of specific brain activation in stereoscopic vision and the perception of depth information. This work presents the first comparative results of adult women on the effects of stereoscopic perception in three different static environments; a real, a two dimensional (2D) and a stereoscopic three dimensional (3D), all with the same content. Electric brain ac...
متن کاملTowards a Usable Stereoscopic Augmented Reality Interface for the Manipulation of Virtual Cursors
The combination of Augmented Reality (AR) systems and stereoscopic display devices has created a powerful tool with which to ‘supplement’ our view. One application for such systems is for the augmented teleoperation of unmanned vehicles, deployed in remote or hazardous environments. Research in this area has highlighted the need for accurate 3D measurement techniques – such as through the use o...
متن کاملInteractive 3D visualization of structural changes in the brain of a person with corticobasal syndrome
The visualization of the progression of brain tissue loss in neurodegenerative diseases like corticobasal syndrome (CBS) can provide not only information about the localization and distribution of the volume loss, but also helps to understand the course and the causes of this neurodegenerative disorder. The visualization of such medical imaging data is often based on 2D sections, because they s...
متن کاملQuantitative assessment of the effectiveness of using display techniques with a haptic device for manipulating 3D objects in virtual environments
Quantitative assessment is made of using two display techniques, providing two different levels of depth perception, in conjunction with a haptic device for manipulating 3D objects in virtual environments. The two display techniques are 2D display, and interactive 3D stereoscopic virtual holography display on a zSpace tablet. Experiments were conducted, by several users of different ages and co...
